Modern Foreign Languages

Modern Foreign Languages

At Rosewood School we believe that learning a foreign language not only provides a valuable education but prepares our pupils for the ever changing world that we live in. MFL provides a new cultural experience for our pupils and allows them to be more socially aware of other cultures within their community.  It also allows them to develop skills about how ‘language works’ which then can be reinforced across the curriculum

At Rosewood we ensure that every pupil has the opportunity throughout Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 to study a foreign language and develop their interest in the culture of other nations.  KS2 are taught the Modern Foreign Languages of French and Key Stage 3 are taught French and Spanish.  Learning a Foreign Language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for pupils.

Pupils are taught basic French and Spanish vocabulary and common everyday phrases, the emphasis is on learning through listening and speaking, within games and focused lesson activities.  All lessons are designed to develop confidence and enjoyment of speaking a Foreign Language.

At the end of every half term pupils have the opportunity to taste and try foods from different countries and cultures especially the ones from which they are studying. Pupils greatly enjoy this activity and show a real curiosity and willingness to experience new flavours.

We have organised a trip to a Spanish Restaurant in Birmingham for a group of pupils which was enjoyed by all and pupils were encouraged to use the language skills that they had learnt. We are planning for this to become a frequent event.
