Design and Technology
Year 7 have been completing a series of theory and baseline tests, the Design and Make something that moves on water is always enjoyed by students and this year there have been some excellent designs with testing taking part next week.
Year 8 have been split into four teams and are currently working on a remote-control challenge. Each team has an RC car chassis all in identical weight, top speed and acceleration- Teams have come up with a team name and logo and are now designing a body for the chassis, they have researched about materials, bodyweight, aerodynamics and will then build and test the body including adding the décor and team logo to the car. They will then put the car and their skills to the test in the Rosewood Rally.
Year 9 are gearing up for the Design Ventura Competition, and looking forward to the trip to the Design Museum London for the workshop session follow links to discover the brief.
Year 10 are getting to grips with using their own initiative using the knowledge and skills they have acquired whilst investigating design on a contextual basis. During a practical lesson they improved their sketching and prototyping skills by designing and modelling some handlebars in a quick-fire session.
Year 11 are underway with the new GCSE DT iterative design challenge. Pupils have been very upbeat and have all made a positive start. Last year’s DT exam entries achieved well with two of my favourite creations – a built and programmed portable arcade machine and an industrial themed fish wind chime.
